Khwaja Shams-ud-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi (1325- 1389) known as Hafez (or Hafiz) was a great Persian poet. Hafez was born in 1315 in Shiraz, Fars, Iran and he lived to the age of  74-75 in the Timurid Empire. Hafez (or Hafiz), as his pen name, means the safe keeper and memorizer. Since he memorized the whole Quran (Muslims religious book), he was known as Hafez.
