Shapes of Letter Vāv in Farsi
Letter Vāv in Farsi takes the 30th position in the Persian alphabet system. Letter V in Farsi can appear at the beginning, middle, and end of the Persian words. It can join the letter before it but never attaches to the letters after it. So you may find it at the initial, medial, final, and isolated positions.
To write the letter vāv, consider the base line and a little bit above it draw a small circle clockwise then draw a bent and bring it downwards so that it passes the base line and moves to the left side. Its only shape is:

The Sound of Letter Vāv in Farsi- و
The letter V has three specific sounds:
- It can sound like /v/ in the English word “very” and you can find this sound in the Persian word کویر (kavir) which means desert;
- It can sound like /O/ in the English word “old” and you can find this sound in the Persian words تو (to) which means you and دو (do) which means two;
- Sometimes it sounds like /u/similar to the English words “good” and “food” and you can find its sound in the Persian words “گردو” which means walnut and “دوست” which means friend.
Keep in mind that the letter V in Farsi never joins the letters after it but sometimes attaches to the letters before it.
Point: In some words, letter Vāv comes after letter Khe (خ) and consequently it loses its sound. For instanc, in خواستن letter Vāv is silent and the word is pronounced as “Khastan”. More examples are:
- خویش
- خواهر
- خویشاوندان
